[V8] it figures...

The thing is - anyone who has their car worked on has this happen to them
too - they just don't realize it. Either the bad work does not show up for
a while - or some seemingly un-related failure happens that the unwary
customer gets stuck for. Just to make something up, say you bring your V8
in for some reason. The monkey lad does his thing and in the process
strips out a bolt or two. You drive away none the wiser, but in a year you
have major oil leak - or a cracked distributor cap or what ever. You go
back to the same shop, they fix that problem and leave you with two
more.
My friend is in town now to deal with his fathers estate
- part of which is a 2005 hyundai.
The (pos) car has 4500 miles on
it, and the clutch is toast. Gregg told his dad to have it (clutch) looked
at one year ago - meaning the clutch was bad with probably 2000 miles on
it. As kids, my strongest memory of his dad was him yelling at gregg to
not burn up the clutch in the family suburban. He was an old man, but it
seems highly unlikely he burned this out himself. He worked on his cars
all his life, and designed rotary aircraft engines for the Navy. He knew
how to drive a clutch.
I suspect a bad pressure plate - but what do
you know - the dealer tore it down (took under 2 hours to get clutch out)
and found that it was simple wear and tear - so no warranty. They billed
him $1000 for a new clutch. Parts cost is near $280 retail for
aftermarket.
This makes the $3000 I just spent on my car seem like a
bargain.
This is the reason I started working on my own cars 30
years ago. I am quite proud to say that I have not had any major problems
in all that time, and usually I maintain or fix everything myself. The
rare times when I did not (like the transmission rebuild for the Explorer
a few years ago) has been a nightmare. That transmission rebuild took over
a month of back and forth with the shop before I finally found a torn
o-ring causing the transmission to lose oil pressure.
