[V8] Bad MPG, O2 Sensor?

I don't believe the computer uses the OXS directly ... it bases the estimate
on the speed reported by the sensor on the tranny and the duty cycle of the
injectors (which is used for flow). The trip computer has two modes, and
instantaneous and an averaging mode. The behavior described sounds to me
like the driver reset the average reading and watched it settle in over
time. If you happen to be coasting when the average FE was reset I would
not at all be surprised to see a 35 MPG reading instantaneously. I don't
know if the automatics do this, but when you coast above a particular RPM
with the 5-speed you will see the instantaneous reading go to "---" because
the injectors are never opened ... I joke with my daughter and say we're
getting as good fuel economy as a Prius when we coast down the hills near
where we live (yes, I know that isn't completely true).

OBTW, I have a line on a 5-speed V8Q for sale in the SF Bay Area ... I don't
have any details about the asking price or condition of the car ... I think
it is pearl white on the outside. Drop me a line and I'll hook you up with
the seller.

If you were reading 35 MPG at 70 MPH your computer was giving you a
false reading. Hopefully it's just as far off at your 13 MPG reading.
