[V8] Steering Damper replacement

Sort of -- how about a Being There Doing That?   I thought my coil spring behind the t-belt cover was bad, cuz the damper seemed to be doing its thing, but after replacing it (pita), the belt squeal went from audible only at idle to audible only once the engine got spinning. Weird. 

Anyway, right now my shock damper is on my bench, confirmed bad (tough to expand, but very slow to retract) next to my spare damper, which is also shot (works better as a yo-yo).   Removal's a snap. You spill a little coolant removing the top hose and moving the bottom hose up out of the way, and if you haven't done it 20 times before, the hole for the set pin (small punch) is tough to access without a friend or an anvil to hang from the serp belt -- but a straightforward procedure so far, leaving the fan/etc in place. 

After shopping around I ordered one from my local dealer -- one day and 20% off list of $135.  Reinstall on Wed evening.

a) how it feels and symptoms when it's bad and
b) The steps  to replace it?
