[V8] The reason it won't run is . . .

... funny, I have recent BTDT on this ... just after taking #2 in to have
the niggling little problems fixed and when I was feeling pretty comfortable
about the car ... it died fairly close to home ... fuel pump stopped.

I thought I had the narrow pump, so I ordered one from SJM Autotechnik (AKA
Scott Mockry) ... then I pulled the pump and found I had the wrong one. I
went to a FLAPS with the old pump in my hand ... which was a good thing
because they didn't have the exact part, but they looked it up on the
computer and found one that had the same form factor. I can get the part
number for you, but what I found was that even though the pump housing was
the right size, the screws on the top were reversed relative to the one I
had. I made it work without too much trouble and the pump worked in the
car. It sure seems to me Bosch could have made a standard ... like the
larger diameter connection is negative and the smaller positive ... go
figure.

All in all it is a pretty easy job, even without the tool called out for
R&R. If you look at the part of the housing the pump mounts to you'll see
an index mark, with two index marks on the part of the housing in the tank.
It is pretty much standard bayonet, slide it in, push it down while turning
to the lock position. I don't think I'd recommend leaving the pump
unlocked. Funny, I can really relate to the hassles of contorting oneself
in the trunk, but I managed to find a position I could work from which
allowed me to view the innards of the tank with a flashlight ... not when my
arm was inserted of course. From the horror stories I've heard changing the
in-tank pumps on other marques I don't think I'll be one to complain ...

Oh yes, I did lock a vise grip on the trunk strut while I was working on it
... I'd hate to have to get someone to let me out of the trunk ... or have
the trunk lid crash down on my legs ...

Good luck!

BTW, if someone wants me to look up the pump part number I got let me know
...

Fuel pump is seized.

No fuel = no start (duh).

Removed fuel pump, applied 12v to terminals, got loud hum but no whirr.
Screwdriver blade gently inserted in bottom could not turn the rollers
or roller disc - this one is locked up tight.

Requires personal origami to get this in and out - fold self into
unusual positions halfway in and out of trunk, and of course, every time
I picked up a wrench, it started to rain, as soon as it stopped, I could
undo another clamp or fastener and it started again.

Also noticed that the plastic pump holder/basket was not locked into the
bottom of the tank. Manual says you need some special tool to rotate the
pump housing in the tank before withdrawing it - not so here, just
lifted it right out. Is that going to be a problem on reassembly or do I
need to figure out how to lock the pump into the bottom of the tank -
can I just drop it back in? (Ran fine for all the time I've had the car,
over 4 years . . . )

Now the question - Bosch # 0 580 464 991, Audi # 441 906 091A

Who's got these at the best price? Prefer Bosch/Germany, not made by
slave labor in tents in parts unknown.

Updated part number?

Note that this is NOT the pump with the aluminum spigot on the bottom
(although it does feed from the bottom), and is the large 60mm diameter
pump, not the skinny Pierburg.

Build date of the car is 6/89.

Any tricks, special instructions, new and exciting things to know about
putting this back together?
