[V8] Imminent Fuel Pump Failure?

Since you know it's ancient, and you know it's making noise... start now
to make the funds for a new pump, the time to install it, and the level
of tank align in your favor.

I work in the auto parts industry (oo, big man, big title)... and I sell
quite a few fuel pumps. It amazes me that domestic car makers still
haven't figured out how to make in-tank pump changing easy (access,
access, access!). But the big kicker is that almost every single
customer says, "Yep, tank's completely full." But then again, they
don't have to stick their arm into the tank, they have to drain and drop
the entire tank.

IME a noisey pump is usually due to contaminants/debris in the built-in screen of the pump rather than actual pump failure. Kind of like a clogged drinking straw. Of course, this causes the pump to work that much harder and will hasten its demise. Good luck. And try to have as little fuel in your tank as possible before changing out the pump.

>One of my '90 V8's fuel pump just started to make substantially more noise today. Car has about 180 000 miles on it....to the best of my knowledge pump has never been changed. Pump was previously slightly audible.....now it is clearly audible...it is worrisome. Performance of car seems unchanged. The noise became noticeable at the end of a lengthy day trip totalling about 200 miles. I changed the fuel filter several months ago.
