I too have that same whining sound in my baby. As with yours, when I release the pressure on the gas cap it goes away. I've always wanted an answer to this issue.

Well I decided to keep the beast... I located my Oil Leak, Ordered the
gasket kit to replace them.. I have located my dreaded Pentosin Leak.. I
just need to go to dealer tomorrow and order a part for that.. That X bolt.

Now onto the odd problem. I thought the fuel pump was going out however
I have diagnosed it and the fuel pump is not making any noise... When
running I hear noise coming from the fuel filter area but it is not the
Fuel Pump? Any BTDT?

Also when I shut off the car if I release the pressure in the gas cap
the whine ends.. Any help here please? Other than that I just need to do
a Oil Change, I inspected my timing belt and it has no cracks or any
sign of needing to be replaced just yet. I am paranoid and want to
replace those bastards every 40k miles ;-)
