[V8] hissing sound from the fuel pump?

The few V8 tanks i've pulled aren't coated and rust very quickly. If the car has sat for any length of time with low fuel it's possible that the tank top has rusted and it's flaked off and collected in the fuel pump basin.
Another thing is that the internal rubber return hose has disentigrated, or the fuel pump is just old and used up.
