Probably the reason the dealership won't work on old cars is that they don't
have anyone who is trained to work on the older cars. Old cars like the
Type 44 cars have long since relegated to the scrap heap in this country,
and the cost of training mechanics is so high, that money can't be wasted
training young guys to work on antiques.
Just because a dealership says they have fifty years experience in the shop
probably only means that they have fifteen mechanics working there who have
been out of high school about five years each.
The more new cars I see, the more I like the old ones. An Internet friend
of mine is a former Mercedes owner who now raves about his Toyota Super
Camry. (Lexus). He still gets the promotional stuff from Mercedes and
although he doesn't say it this way, the "new" cars all look like they came
from one phase or another of the Japanese School of Automobile Design.
I find it humorous to see that no matter how many bumps and wings and chrome
gizzies are stuck on them, an SUV still looks like all the other SUVs: a
box is always a box. Just some are more butt ugly than others. I am
surprised that Motor Trend doesn't give an award for the ugliest SUV of the
year. I bet the advertising mavens could figure out a way to use that award
in their advertising, and people would line up to buy the things, too.
