[V8] steering rack mounting surface cracked

When I took the 93 in recently to have the H&Rs swapped out for some stock
springs, I also asked them to check the steering rack. For some time, the
steering wheel would not center after turning in either direction. The
steering would return to center and the car would track straight, but the
steering wheel would be off a good bit to whichever side the direction of
the previous turn was.
It really caught my attention on an S-curve portion of city boulevard the
other day when I was moving along a good bit over the limit and to turn
back to the right at one point, I had to crank in a noticeable amount of
add'l lock and it did not feel linear at all, it felt very disconnected
like something was bending or moving other than mechanically.
So they found a portion of body wall in the engine compartment cracked
right where the driver's side end of the rack bolts to it. It looked like
fatigue cracks but I don't recall ever hearing of such a thing on a type
44. It looked very much like the firewall cracking around the clutch
master cylinder on CGTs and urqs for which I have installed Jeff Lewis
braces on both of mine.
They welded it up and it feels solid. Has anyone else experienced this?
Have I just missed or disregarded discussion of this on the list?
Thanks,
Ed
