On some engines with chains, there are after market upgrades that
eliminate the chain and replaces it with gears. After X number of miles,
depending on the design, chains have their own sets of problems.
It's all in the design, I had no qualms with the timing belt in ole
BlowVo 240, when it broke from age/neglect (always the case with that
Swedish brick) I could change the belt in about 15 minutes on the side of
the road in a snowstorm (and I did, once.) Just about everything was
very easy to repair on that car, one could expect no less from a good
appliance.
