Well, the requirements are pretty stringent, in that the car needs to have
been registered for at least the past year. It may be cheap to do so in
certain states, but Michigan certainly isn't one of them -- as annual
registration costs are based on value of the car when new.

The only depreciation is what money you had in your wallet. Let's see: $214
for the '93 with 206k on the clock.

I just registered my V8 here in Maine. The total cost was $263.80. That
was the registration fee which is paid to the State of Maine, and almost
$200 in excise, or personal property tax that remains in the local community
in which the car is registered.

The excise tax is as low as it will ever go, but this year the state
increased the rates for registration and for vanity plates....yes, I DO have
vanity plates on the V8 AND my truck, although both carry veterans plates
the cost difference for those by themselves is zero. Ah, vanity!

Every time I register one of the vehicles here, I marvel at how others, and
particularly young families manage to register a relatively new
somethingorother SUV. And imagine how all those folks who are registering
their new, gas guzzler financed something or other are going to feel when
they go to register and pay CURRENT excise taxes!

I'll keep the oldies but goodies going as long as possible.

Roger
