 Roger has a project!!!

Wooo :)

V8 A6 Avant sounds great - and maybe even not too expensive if you can make swaps like you hope.

But, you have to promise photos to accompany the words as you work through this in the deep drifting snows.? Or is this really just you're way of staving off the New England Winter Madness that afflicts oh so many?? As a former Worcester/Cambridgian and long fan of the area (a youth spent from the White Mountains to Monhegan Island) I am well aquainted with the Madness ;)

Roger, have you read any Bill Bryson?? It might save you some money by distraction ;)

John

This would be a good conversion. The 3.6 litre V8 and automatic transmission in the '97 A6 would make a GREAT car. No, it's not an S6 but the automatic transmission makes it a perfect car for general purposes. It should deliver decent fuel economy as a long distance tourer, and around town won't be terrible either....regular gas. I know where there is a donor V8 with a broken timing belt...might be cheap enough. Then the engine could come out, be resealed and re-valved etc, and the transmission, ecu and harness and all that jazz would be right at hand ready to go. The motor in the A6 is running very well, and might find a home once it is out to help...might pay for the V8 with broken belt. Thinking is dangerous when the ground is two feet deep with snow and it was 15 below zero this morning.... No matter what you do with the engine, you still need a transmission. To me that makes it not quite the perfect candidate for an engine swap. However, that transmission should be more readily available/rebuildable. 'Twould be interesting to make a call to Force5 and see if he has a serviceable unit that could be swapped in. Maaaayyybe even could trade straight up working engine for working transmission. Voila, the perfect candidate. I like the idea of a C4 Avant with a V8. Hey, "they" even did it over there. How much of a job would it be to fit a PT into a C4? Fitting a 20v turbo 5 and a manual would be far more work and you would be left w/o the distinctive looks of the 91 Avant. Why build an S6 Avant when they're already out there waiting to be purchased? Personally, I would want to do this as efficiently as possible, given the primary goal of creating a V8 Avant. St

arting with this particular candidate, swap the working engine for a working transmission. I chose the PT because I have no idea how robust the A6 V6 autobox is so I figure tax it as little as possible. We're still talking 240hp in place of what, 172? 190? Seems a reasonable upgrade. Not to mention the bump in the torque.
