Sorry I am a little late to reply (catching up on old emails).

Carsten has a factory hitch on his silver V8 (aka Christine); she (Christine
- aptly named) tried to run me down in the parking lot of the Neckarsulm

On the one available from the factory, the ball is at the end of a single
casting that disappears under the bumper.  In Europe, they developed a
single standard for ball size, so they don't need to swap to different size
balls.  Not sure if their standard lines up with any of ours (e.g. 1-7/8"
class 1).

I`d rather look for the factory option detachable Westfalia hitch. When 
not in use, it's totally invisible.
Additionally, when equipped with the factory towing package, there were 
two 'braces' added in the trunk to stiffen up the car. Without those, 
towing capacity is limited - something ALL hitches except the factory 
one have in common. Towing even heavy trailers at triple-digit speeds is 
a blast in my so-equipped car.
However, I have no clue if that package was available in North America 
or not....
