I am pretty sure they are to calibrate the MPG function of the trip  
computer.  It is in the manual somewhere but not where you would  
expect to find it. I remember stumbling across it many years ago.  Not  
to worry about though - the worst that can happen is that the trip  
computer is off with its MPG calculations.
