Interesting project. Just dropped off my wife's 100CSQ Avant for inspection
and a couple of little projects.
There at the wrench's shop is a 1997 A6 Avant Quattro that was towed in. I
saw the car when it first arrived a couple of days ago, and thought it was
pretty clean looking. The symptom was "hard gear selecting".
Turns out the transmission input shaft....the shaft that runs down into the
transmission itself is very, very stiff.
My wrench has asked me to ask all ofyou out there in the great Audi Brain
Trust in the ether if anyone has heard about this? Obviously the fix might
be to drop the pan to gain access, or drop the transmission. But the
question is whether this might be corrosion of the shaft and housing
together inside, necessitating a transmission R&R or replacement.
The car was given to these people, has 200,000 miles on it and is running
very well. They will NOT do a transmission so my wrench may own this car
for the time that he has in it.
Comments?
Roger
