Thanks to the many folks who gave me help on how to get the starter out. The starter won Round 1 because I'm pretty sure Audi put superglue on the bolt threads when they installed the upper bolt, and the weekend slipped away with the bolt still in place. Oh, and the car ate one of my 8mm sockets. It fell off when I was putting the distributor cap back on and vanished...forever. Next weekend, I'll go for Round 2. But at least I know how to get to the thing and that I can correctly reassemble things, so hooray for knowledge gained there....
The serpentine belt is next up, but I want to make sure that I'm going about this the right way. The rack, pump, and high pressure hose are less than 4k miles old. The symptoms are serious squeaking when i turn the steering wheel at low speeds and little-to-no power assist at low speed. Once I'm moving at more than a few mph, the squeaking goes away, and steering is fine. I've got a new serpentine belt, idlers, tensioner spring and sleeve ready to go in this weekend. Is there anything else that might cause these symptoms that I should check out before/while I do the serpentine belt?
