I think the problem is worse than you think...
This is an indication that the clutch is toast.  It gradually gets  
harder to engage for some reason.  Mine did it too.  When I replaced  
the clutch,  I actually had to pull out the transmission again because  
I was convinced I forgot to install the throw out bearing because as I  
was bleeding the system,  I could easily push the pedal all the way in  
with my hand.  It turned out that I did everything right - the new  
clutch was just nearly effortless to engage.  Since then, my over/ 
under spring broke and I replaced it with a different part number,  
which is noticeably weaker than the correct but unavailable V8 part.

FWIW, my clutch was pretty much done at about 100K miles (hard  
shifting, stiff pedal, grind into 2nd gear at high rev shift).  I have  
no idea how the previous owner drove it, and that seems to be an early  
death for an Audi clutch, but there you have it...
