There's a special vise-grip pliers that's ideally suited to this:

The small and medium sizes work well on brake lines, without  
excessively distorting the fitting.
While I'm extolling the virtues of vise-grips, everyone should own at  
least one of these:
(locking chain pliers)

They're really handy when you need to hold a pulley stationary,  
although you should protect the pulley surface with an old piece of  
the appropriate belt to prevent marring.
