[V8] Blower motor ..... what a pain in the neck !!!! hands, fingers , elbows back etc...

Well I've been putting it off for ages but the other day the blower finally packed up.. typically in mid winter!
did some research found the part number( 4A0959101 A ) and ordered a pattern part. have spent the last 2 hours getting the old unit out , only to find there is a difference in the offset between motor and fan. 
Not a problem I thought! I'll simply put my fan on the new motor... but after 18 years of spinning around in the dark all it wanted to do was snap into two pieces....
 
Is this what is usually  required? to change the fan drums over? because the new one will not sit back into the blower housing by about 3/4" before it hits the end cover.
Any help would be appreciated.
genuine ones are no longer available from Audi in the UK anymore.
