I don't have an automatic Pete, but your diagnosis says that the
kickdown switch or wiring still does not work. Assuming that the
climate control diagnostic is a valid one, you need to trace back
through the wiring diagrams to find the problem.

I found the wiring diagram here if you need it:
http://www.eserviceinfo.com/downloadsm/13270/Audi_V8%20Quattro.html

You need to download all six ".rar" files and then "un-rar" them. I
only had to double click on the first file and my mac knew how to do
the rest. If you are on windows, my condolences, and you will
probably need to find a free "rar" program. There should be about 30
of them, and one might even work without installing a virus.

and just to make you feel good about owning a V8 instead of a W12,
read through this:
http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://dubfoto.com/albums/userpics/10003/F265_from_Wiring_Diagram.jpg&imgrefurl=http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread%3Fid%3D2993477&h=803&w=581&sz=92&tbnid=5TGC_TTQ1CiGNM:&tbnh=143&tbnw=103&prev=/images%3Fq%3Daudi%2Bv8%2Bwiring%2Bdiagram&usg=__3EM1kR4kfhjhuNR5kYNafB6UgQI=&ei=qUFASuy9ApHWsQOmwc2kDw&sa=X&oi=image_result&resnum=3&ct=image

that is a long link - you may have to do some cut and past to get it
all, but the gist of the "essay" is that to replace the $400
thermostat in a VW Pheaton, you need several more hundred dollars in
misc gaskets and seals - and than of course the trip back to the
factory to remove the broken bolt made of solid unobtanium. Makes
our motors look downright primitive.
