Brake hardware should not affect ABS function, period.? They are separate entities. ? The ABS computer on the pre-96 quattros are dumb non-quattro-chassis-specific algorithums, so they could care less how much hardware you hang on the upright.? Read:? Impending lockup is impending lockup. ? There are no 'rings', the abs sensor reads teeth on the driveshaft as others have noted. ? I did post up the procedure for motronic diagnostic, but that's for an autobox that uses ABS signals to lock up the center diff.? The 5spd uses a torsen center, so technically there is no signal used, but the diagnostic may still be in the computer coding - can't say I've tried that - I'd venture the code is still retrievable in the 5pd ecu box.? The codes and procedures should be in the archives within the last month.? You might also want to ck ABS sensor adjustment, and that pesky 10amp fuse on top of the ABS relay under the passenger footwell.
My bet would be a sensor not adjusted correctly after a brake hardware install.

Ed is right, the rings are part of the hub/outer CV assembly, and therefore not
affected by the brake kit. However, the sensors are, and it's as simple as
finding the original connectors and shorting them. BTDT on a ton of Audi's,
including my sister's TT.
As for the ABS, the CV's were probably changed when they swapped to teh 5-speed
(they are different) and therefore a sensor may have been hit when reinstalling.
There is a way to pull codes such that the exact sensor can be pinpointed, it
was discussed on the list within the last three months or so. I think Justy
pointed out the exact procedure, but I'm not 100% sure about that.
