I think its a combo of ekectrical frying and interlock.
I would say check for the crank position sensor and cam angle sensor if it has it for starters.
On the vr6 motors (closest relevance I've got) if the timming belt slips a tooth or the timming is off too much the ecu withholds fuel and spark.
Number of sensors do this. I would focus you search to timing and temp related engine sensors in and around the heads, as they likely got the hottest.
good luck.

Subj: [V8] UPDATE Engine Trouble (v6 - but still Audi)
Ok, time for an update. I will warn you I am more confused then ever now.
Went to work on it today - tested compression, found same compression numbers I found 6mo ago (when it was running, BTW). Around 180 psi all around. Good numbers.
Then I checked spark - Mind you I assumed that I had spark because it would cough and sputter with starting fluid? - guess what, no spark? What is the deal with that - I'm thinking that it would try to start with fluid because of compression? Does that sound crazy? Anyway, I tryed 6 different plugs, all 3 coils, different wires - still couldn't get it to spark. What is the deal.
I'm still not sure that I'm getting fuel out of the injectors, none of the plugs were wet though so it seems as if it isn't getting into the cylinders.
I pulled the codes - 4444 - no codes present.
I even tried a new key switch, because it has had trouble in the past - no change.
So - my three current theorys are the following:
1. The oil leak and loss of pressure is totally unrelated to the no start problem and something like the computer is fried?(hard to belive, I know - but belive it or not I have had something like this happen before)
2. There is some sort of interlock that stops fuel and spark if oil pressure drops to protect the engine? Again, I'm not that familiar with this car or it's electrics and I don't have a service manual that I can use.
3. The engine got hot because of lack of oil and fried something electrical?
So far, everyones suggestions have been very helpful and sent me to look in various directions - I know the answer is out there - and I'll bet money that someone on this list has it. Thanks all.
