Ok, new problem, sorry. Still working on the v6, just waiting on the service manual to arrive. Anyway, On the v8q - did a timing belt service, all rollers, waterpump, conti belt. Would have a 'slap' for lack of a better term, at various times. Took it all back apart, replaced damper, replaced belt with OE audi belt. Slap seems to have gone away, but before I buttoned it up, I noticed that the belt rides toward the back of the cam pulleys? I know this because you can see the shiny part in the front where the old belt ran for 60k. I assume it is a mis-alignment of an idler pulley and I'm thinking it may be causing the noise because it looks like it may be hitting the water pump housing in one place. I tried checking any pulley or mounting surface for wear, but can't find any problems. I also bought a rebuilt audi water pump, could they have bored the shaft wrong during re-build? Any BTDT? Thanks again.
