[V8] Excessive Oil and Emission Pressure

Your motor can burn oil for any reason any other motor can, and a few
extras as well!

My '91 had a symptom where it would smoke really bad on a long hill
descent with the throttle closed. So bad that it would kill the
engine if I just pushed in the clutch at the bottom of the hill
without revving the motor to clear the oil out of the cylinders. The
solution was to replace the rings. Apparently some of the earlier 3.6
motors came from the factory with less than optimal rings in them.
Mine was burning more than a quart per 1000 miles with about 80K on
the odometer. I finally replaced the rings at about 150K miles. I
found the cylinders to be within wear limits, but valve guides needed
replacing. Having done both of those things now, I no longer burn oil
and the motor is strong.
If you choose to go this route, you will not be able to replace main
or rod bearings - so don't remove the crank and be very careful with
the rod bearings. You can replace the stretch type rod bolts and head
bolts. All other gaskets and parts necessary for a valve job are
readily available. I think if you really wanted to, you could do this
with the engine in the car by removing the subframe. I chose to pull
the motor.
