Paul,
The changer that is there should only be a FM modulator type not one
that was integrated into the radio controls. The cassette adapter will
actually give you better sound (over the FM modulator). The "updated"
Gamma head unit had built in provisions as a CD controller, but then
needed "cd changer" communications to be overcome in order to use the CD
inputs for anything other than the CD changer.
"there was a guy"... that made something called a VWPIC a while ago now
that was claimed to be able to defeat the changer controls and allow you
to use the aux input but I can't find anything about him now.
If all the amps are good I'd say to just change the head unit (if you
must, knowing that you'll lose the dash display for the radio) then use
the RCA level outputs - connect them directly to all the bose amps, use
the "remote" or power antenna lead to turn the amps on.
Good Luck with the "new" car..
