[V8] Not just headache, butbone numbing cold too!

Stainless is fairly soft - I doubt it has the strength these bolts  
need.  I would not try to re-engineer this - just get the hardware  
called for, install it to spec, and you will be fine.

I am guilty of re-using hardware here, but I am careful about torque  
specs, and I use loctite. So far so good...
And, on torque specs,  it seems lots of people have problems with sub- 
frame bolts.  Since I reuse these bolts, and since they are already  
"stretched", I torque to spec + just a little more. I do not go the  
full extra 1/4 turn.  Probably should locktite them too. I can't  
remember if I did that step, but I have had the subframe off many  
times over the years, and no stripped or loose hardware problems.
