I'm ready to give up. I got a smaller mirror. With some finagling, I can
see what I think is the circlip, but only from one side. It could just be
a washer. I can get fingers in there, or an angled circlip pliers, but not
both. I can't see or feel what I might hook the circlip pliers onto to
get that circlip off.

Plan B: From the Family Album, MG 8 SG 39 Ill 129-50 makes it seems that
the motor (1A, part number 441 959 801 A) can be separated from the
regulator ("window lifter") itself.

Can the motor be removed from the "window lifter"? Can it be done in place?
If I could get the motor out, I might be able to fix it or replace it.

The window is still down, with a plastic trash bag taped in place to keep
out the rain and the snow. It survived the 65 MPH gusts we had the other
day.
