You can 'repair'  ticking lifters actually.  If you are ok with taking the cams out to get to them, basically you take them out and soak them in atf.  Then you need a rubber lined pliers,  and you :nock out the center valve and spring and clean the gum and tarnish that ruins them, add a bit of oil, and reassemble.

Pretty common practice with mazda  Dohc head (not the miata tho).  I will find the writeup later today as well.
