My BTDT on the lifters for the MC-1 engine was that "cleaning" them with MMO
quieted them down at first, but after a little while they started making
noise again, much louder and more frequently than ever before. It was so
bad that people would look at the car when idling at traffic lights. The
only solution was to replace the lifters, which did the trick. Of course
for that car I needed to buy only 10 lifters ... I suspect replacing the
lifters on a V8Q would total the car ...
I would not recommend running ATF, MMO or anything else to try to clean
sticky lifters ...

PS - Thanks for reminding me of this one ... the car had the TB break
shortly after this, so I should have a set of good lifters for the "new"
motor I'll be installing ...
PPS - MMO => Marvel Mystery Oil

I'm still looking for this nice write-up with pictures from mx6.com on
cleaning HLAs. Its pretty easy. What the ticking issue is caused by is
varnish on the 'cylinder' walls of an HLA, so the center section with ball
and spring is no longer able to reciprocate fast enough, and so it gets
lagged down by the varnish, gunk, and oil buildup. There is rarely if ever
any dammage to the actual steel parts or the spring, they are all made out
of very strong steel, and because of the hydraulic assembly in them aren't
really a wear part, or under a ton of stress. Just the tops can get beat up
after a few hundered thousands.
Aha! I found it, of course it was in the stickies... So, here ye be. Just
read this whole first page of the thread, should give you a good idea of
what to do. Just take a deep breath before this big adventure... haha.
