That is what I mean - the Toyota truck coils (that is the same as the Land
Cruiser). The cheapest new aftermarket ones I could find were Beck-Arnley
units at about $80/per. That was from a local shop, so $65-online before
shipping sounds like the same thing. They last 13 months/11,000 miles for
me, though. The Denso-made OEM toyota ones are better, but pricey new. They
can be found used, but then, they are going to have a lot less life in
them. Having the coil stuck down in the cylinder head where it heat cycles
with engine temps is just bad for longevity.
Part of the reason you can get away with the maintenance headache with them
on higher-mileage newer vehicles is you have OBDII. Stop, plug in the
reader, see which coil failed and swap in a new one - 20 minutes (less if
it's one of the front cylinders that are immediately accessible). But with
the v8 you don't have that OBDII diagnostic aid.
I am most certainly not saying this is a foolish idea or not to play with
it; just don't expect future maintenance ease, improved reliability or lower
costs, even with new aftermarket coils or Toyota truck take-offs. You would
be doing it for performance gains.
