Dave Forgie did it on the urS, using A4 coil packs. Here's a link

There were issues with the quality of the A4 coil packs, and someone
else did it using a GM coil packs.

That said, I believe the S6 started off with Power Output Stages to
trigger the original coils, and the COP just moved the coil from the
fire wall to the plug. They didn't have a distributor to get rid of.

And googling: programmable ignition controller distributorless
turns up MSD, which has a bunch of stuff, including a magnetic
crank trigger which may be useful.
