I polled the list quite a few years back as to optimum set-up, also for a
5-speed.
Based on the list's (then) collective wisdom, I installed Bilstein springs
and the Boge Turbo Gas (pretty sure that's what it was; it was quite a few
years ago and I don't have my records to hand yet; I'm in the process of
moving/unpacking). I ran that with both 17" and 16" wheels and I never
found the Boge too squishy, including quite a bit of aggressive driving on
Vermont roads. I did go back to 16" as the 17" were too harsh with that
set up. The car was/is really stable with that set up. I think the stock
springs and ride height may be what are limiting you.
Another point is the Bilstein springs dropped the car slightly, maybe 1/2 to
3/4". So perhaps it was the added pre-load of that which made the Boge feel
good to me. I like that set up and have been very happy with it for a long
time.
