My wife's '94 100CS Avant has the same issues as yours. Especially
pronounced in the winter, in the milder weather, the temperature and fan
adjustments are really not available until the car has really warmed up to
normal operating temperatures. This is particularly annoying in the winter
or bad weather when the full defrost cycle has been selected, and that
switch seems to work all the time, but once engaged, if the temperature is
below, say sixty degrees, no other choice can be selected until the car has
been run say ten or fifteen miles then everything seems to work normally.
I suspect that the contacts inside the switch panel itself may age and wear
differently when used some than those positions that are not normally used.
I don't think it is inside the dashboard other than in the control head
itself. It would be interesting to know how much a NEW control head from
Audi would cost. I would probably only want to be told after I had several
strong slugs of some alcoholic drink to better cushion the shock.
I have decided that we will live with the issue until we do a complete
restoration of the car, since everything still works.
