Peter, have you tried disconnecting the temp sensor at the back of the right
cylinder head (by the distributor) to see if there is any change? Black and
sooty points to excessive unburnt fuel. In my experience (though not vast -
just had a lot of V8s), this has been due to faulty fpr, bad temp sensor or
(especially) bad wiring to the oxygen sensor. You may also want to (if you
haven't already) temporarily disconnect the oxygen sensor wiring at the plug
at the harness under the left side distributor to see if there is any
change. Beyond that, i really can't give any other advice regarding your
problem -- except there are few more things that come to mind: Bad mass
airflow sensor, bad air temp sensor (at front of engine) and faulty idle
stabilisor (though doubtful on that last one).
