I might suspect correctly that Mr Jager is "Yumy Jager" on Motorgeek? Full disclosure please?
"Well, then I apologize. I assumed from this post:that you knew I was friends with the people at Shokan ...
My bad."
"My buddies at Shokan are rebuilding the 4.2TT block..."

IF SO... or even if not:

Paul, I've been involved with Audis since 1990, and have lot of first-hand and indirect experience with your fine friends in NY. Some of it was just ok, more of it was not. The Audi community is small, you can't afford to piss off a forum on behalf of someone else in the business. The reputation your friends' business has, IMO, directly conflicts with the Mission Statement on it's website. Specifically, many find this statement to be too often, oxymoronic: "Here at Shokan, we're dedicated to customer satisfaction. Not only to we do everything in our power to make sure you get the right part for your Audi as fast as possible and at the best price." That should be a major strive for excellence, not a defensive position when challenged.

I was 15 years as a National Sales Manager for a Pharmaceutical Packaging Supplier. I'm pretty sure I understand what makes a reputation, and what generates goodwill and increases sales and customer satisfaction (+ years of repeat) = Reputation. Built up well, it puts forth dedication and pride, not defense of reputation, and offensive positions taken by third parties (you).

I also know very well that used auto parts can be insured, they always have been and continue to be. However, if too many shipping complaints and claims hit any major carrier, a customer can be denied the ability to insure any boxed goods. See Mission Statement.

So, what does it take to turn around a reputation that is neutral (at best) in the customer-rich niche target market = Audi Forums? Focus on the claimed mission statements over the long term. At the end of the day, being the top dollar vendor is only a problem when customer interface can't exceed the cut rate vendor. I say, either your friends need to cut their prices significantly, or increase the value to match what they charge to the expectation that comes with it.

In the meantime, I might offer with the approach you have taken below and on MG, you are not a good spokesperson for your friends' business?

Sure shokan is going to have someone monitor this list, with a doz followers, who chuck $20 in the tank at the time and ramble on how good old diesel Mercs were back in the day,... in case somebody thrashes their reputation.

i think they have better things to do.

That was the 1st thought that crossed my mind. ;) Shokan strikes me as
exactly the sort of business that would employ trollers.

When I was still down in VA my favorite place to deal with was Brim's in
Kenton Ohio. They nearly always had at least a pair of V8's and never failed
to send the correct part, no matter how obscure, once I gave them a
description of it and where its located on the car.
