[V8] operating with timing belt cover off?

When I use to ice race a Rabbit GTI the timing belt would come off if you hit a snow bank !! Because the 1.8 engine / valve train was not close tolerance , you would end up putting the belt back on and re-timing.  So I agree with Ron , you should have the belt well covered. cheers superdave
