[V8] A V8 in my future?

In Europe, the C4 sedan and wagon was available with three V8 engine
choices in addition to the 20VT I5 you got in North America. All were
4.2, - the 3.6 and 3.7 variants were only put in the V8/A8.
Initially, from 1992 onwards, as S4 4.2, with the same ABH engine and
essentially the same drivetrain options as in the 4.2 V8 (4spd auto or
6spd manual).
Then, after the 1995 facelift as S6 with the AEC engine (rated at 290
hp, very similar to the ABH) with again either a 4spd auto or a 6spd manual.
And then there was the S6plus, a limited-edition (less than 1,000 were
made) high performance version made by the Quattro GmbH subsidiary with
an engine (code: AHK) that is similar to the one found in the later S8:
rated at 326 horsepower, it sports distributorless ignition, variable
intake runners and mechanical lifters(!) - this thing revs to 7000 and
beyond like it were half the size. Only available with the 6-speed
manual, and a real blast to drive. Top speed with the 155 mph limiter
removed is ~170 mph.
These can be had for about four to five grand (nice ones with low miles
start at seven, though) nowadays - a real bargain.
