[V8] Radio code remembered by car?

This is not strictly V8 but I thought some of you might know the answer.
I just bought a '97 A4 with a Delta CC radio and the previous owner couldn't find the radio code.
The radio is in some weird state where it is unresponsive to any button pushing but occassionaly sticks on one FM station or other. I wanted to pull the fuse and see if it reset itself, but I am worried that it will go into SAFE mode.
Now here's the technical tidbit that surprised me:
I have see a forum post where it was claimed that as long as a radio is in the original car it was first installed in, then even if you disconnect the power, that when power is restored, the radio communicates with the car's ECU over a CANBUS data link and if everything checks out, then no code is needed and the radio operates as normal.
Can anyone confirm this?
