[V8] A small quiz for the V8 inclined

What sensor input would you think might be used for both cruise control
function and transmission downshifts?
 
When I have the 93 V8 in Sport mode the transmission upshifts as expected,
but it won't make the more aggressive downshifts that I have experienced in
the 94 V8, like down to 2nd at 55-60 or down to 1st at 30 or so.  The one
time it did downshift aggressively in Sport mode, I was also able to get the
cruise control to work, hence the search for some common link to help direct
my troubleshooting.
