Why not point the individual to this list?
Here's the scoop. The State of California has an error in their database on
the Audi V8 Quattro. If the car was originally sold as a 50 state car the
MIL or Check Engine light is functional, but the non-California rated cars
DO NOT have the MIL connected ... It states as much on the wiring diagrams
and owner's manual ... but the omniscient State of California requires ALL
V8Q's to have a functional MIL/CEL/whatever you want to call it. This
person will not be able to pass the "smog check" until the light is made
functional. The wires that need to be connected are taped into the wiring
loom at either side of the center console near the dash. There is a
standard shape to the graphic for the MIL, it has a side view of an engine
shape with a lightning bolt.

Subject: [Bulk] [V8] ECE check light in instrument cluster
Hi,
a V8 driver from LA has reported a problem with DOT technical check
(whatever's the right name for that in California) 'cause the engine
check symbol isn't enlighted when the ignition is turned on. The tester
is absolutely sure that there has to be an engine check control in the
instrument cluster. I've checked against the US repair manual and
indeed, it seems to be wired. In Europe the engine check symbol is
inactive respectively not wired.
Could anybody of you please provide a photo to me showing - or showing
not - that ECE symbol in the cluster respectively could you tell me if
you have this ECE (or ECU) check light in the cluster at all or only in
the Californian version or just in some production years?
Thanks
Bastian
