The timing sensors should throw codes if they are going bad, and you can test them out of the vehicle pretty easy.
Also note that the test procedure can MAKE them bad too if you are not careful.
To test, lock a sensor in a vise, connect a ohm meter to the signal wires, and evenly heat the sensor with a hot air gun. If you see the resistance rise then open (infinity ohms) then you have a bad sensor. Don't get too crazy with the heat or you may break an otherwise good sensor.
The sensors are just a iron bar with a lot of turns of very fine copper wire - and heat cycles cause expansion which eventually breaks the wire. As it cools, it makes contact again.
It appears that all sensors will fail at some point.
I have had some kludged up ABS sensors in my car for about a year with no problems. Not sure if I recommend it to anyone else, but it is cheap (as in free) but possibly not reliable.
