[V8] 2231 code hell, i'm at my wits end!

If you hook up a ProDiag (or equiv) computer to the ECU it can read out 10
engine parameters while you drive. On the old PDA-based program it saves
measurements in a text file you can read into Excel and plot from there. I
would imagine VAGCOM can do the same thing. Based on what you have done
already it seems this may be your best (only?) means to get clues on where
to look next ...

Paul, thanx for the response. When I had the miss fire I replaced
caps/rotors/plugs/plug wires/o2 sensor/pass side dizzy (hall sender) When I
pulled the old caps I checked them for any thing and found nothing wrong
with them. No cracks or excessive carbon build up. When I replaced the wires
I checked the old ones. #4 had a bad plug top from someone having a hard
time pulling it I would imagine....it still ohmed out though. But I replaced
them anyway.
I can get in the car and it will run great for like 10 min. This is in the
morn on my way to work. Most the trip is highway driving. I can change gears
at 5/6G with no hesitation/miss fire/hick up! Ie she runs like a raped
ape. When the car acts up it's weird. I can b driving no problem but when I
get off then throttle it's like I stabbed the brake instead of the
clutch...know what I mean? And getting back on the throttle the pedal feels
sticky...but it's not....getting back on the throttle the car feels like I
got tapped on then rear bumper...know what. I mean? My gas mileage has been
decent. It was round 15 now it's like 19 but should b higher. It has been
suggested to me to trace the ISV circuit. Does anyone know were the
ISV circuit ground is? The book said it's in the wiring harness...but I
replaced the harnness. Unless I'm reading the book wrong?

Hey Ron,My V8(91 3.6) I have chased around a bunch of codes and did
continually get the 2231 code reaccuring. My problem was ignition related.
After a full ignition tune, wires, plugs, caps, rotors, O2 sens. Codes
cleared.Hope this helps,Paul

I guess the long and short of it is I just can't get rid of the ISV
code.I've been getting the code for about 2 months now and have went through
everything....
The weird thing about it is the ISV is brand spanking new. I found one on
ebay NOS (new old stock). When I got it, it was as advertised clean as a
whistle!
in the time I have been getting the ISV code I have all so gotten codes
for,02 sensor and iat. So I replaced, 02 sensor. I was getting
an oscillating idle. It would go from 1,000 to 1,600'ish and kept repeating
till I would hit the throttle. Allen unplugged the Green wire and it went
away. So I replaced it and works as it should now IAT. The one in the car
looked fine. Wires were fine as well. I had cut the sheeth back and checked
the wires and they were fine. it was solidly sotered still to the sensor.
the wire and diod thing was a little dirty, I cleaned it looked fine ect. I
replaced it
anyway with a new 4.2/Urs4/6 plug in type and the correct connector.
I all so replaced all the breather hoses, valve cover to cover, rear driver
side, front intake, the small one that goes around the rear intake opening.
I all so replaced the one's that go from the valve on the pass side fire
wall, (it's Yellow and Black). There's a hose that goes to the back of the
pass side intake, a small one coming from under the rain deverter and a
length of the hard Black plastic type hose running along the firewall.
I tried another ECU...one from a 5sp. I pulled the original engine wiring
harness. Which meant I had to pull the Intake. So I replaced the intake
gaskets, and Green Knock sensor as well. I replaced the MAF, tried two
different TPS's and know I have adjusted them correct! Allen even did it a
few times just to make sure I was doing it rite...... I have tried two
different throttle bodies as well. All
related fuses are fine ect.....
I had a friend check codes with his scanner and couldn't clear the ISV
code. It would go away but pop rite back up while the computer was still
hooked up to the car and with the car off!
I need help! I have no idea were to look next????
Ron
