 Hi Cary,

Replace the lines - they can get porous over time and leak. My hard lines did with a very fine mist that burned off but could be smelled. It wasn't until I had the mechanic looking under the hood as I fed the throttle and he spotted the mist. IIRC the lines were not unreasonably priced for Audi parts :)

Yes, with the oil level low, you will get some noise, especially in my experience if its been sitting for some time. I didn't have much noise once it was warm with fresh oil though. I ran 5w30 non-synthetic, but I'm sure you'll get a whole range from list members :)

John

Subject: [V8] Fuel leak/valvetrain noise/oil type

Howdy fellas! Already ran into my first problem.

There's a fuel leak on one of the lines running from a hard line on the
firewall to a braided hose that goes under the engine cover. I haven't taken
it off, I assume one line is supply and one line is return. Are these lines
still available in the parts channel? Any suggestion where to procure?

I'm a little bit worried about fire as it's not just a "dirty line" but the
plastic shroud around the lines is actually wet, I assume by capillary
action on the braids. Unsure if the leak is at the fitting or in the line
itself.

Also, is the valvetrain supposed to be loud in these cars? I'm getting some
clicking/tapping at idle and I'm wondering if it's normal or if I have a
lifter issue. The engine was supposedly rebuilt 20-30k ago so I would hope
it's not an actual issue. Oil pressure is fine but the oil is on the MIN
mark. What type of oil do you guys run and what viscosity?

Thanks!
-Cary
