Remove the black covers from the distributor caps. They perform no function other than to cause bizarre and intermittent running issues. If they are not the problem this time, they will be later.

It is more an audible surge than something that I can feel. The car doesn’t slow down and speed up when it surges, rather it seems more like the engine is surging while the motion of the car forward maintains a steady or even increasing pace. I notice the surging when accelerating from a standstill, but since the acceleration to travel speed lasts only a short time, the surging sound is not as noticeable.

The problem is not serious enough to warrant a visit to the wrench yet I don’t think. My wife does not notice the surging sound when we drive together, but I sure do.
