Tom.
Can't you just leave the AC pump on? All you need is for the clutch bearing to be good. Disconnect the clutch wire and you have an idler pulley.

I am sort of in the same boat. I think my pump housing has some sort of leak/porous casting because when I remove one of the mounting bolts I get some refrigerant/oil leaking out the bolt hole. It seems to be OK after it has lost enough charge that the AC is functional but weak. I don't want to spend more on a pump than the car is worth, and I actually like to drive with the windows open anyway. That said, if someone had a killer deal on a good pump I might bite.

Now that i've got one in my hand, I'm closer to that goal....

All 80's Saabs have leaked out at this point. If you want to buy AC parts, let me know,I saved the whole system(where was the leak anyway?) Love to sell it to you. Unless you do the whole system, you can have a bad oring somewhere, so go big if you need it. ..I spent a large chunk of money years ago trying to get the old saab's AC working, and at this point in my life, that's just money overboard, unless you live in the South. AFAIK the fitting is on the passenger side on that aluminum tube with the sensor under that plastic cap and is a standard/not Prezza/ bike fitting.....
