... there may be some similarity to the 100, but the V8 instrument cluster and
that for the T44 are completely different.
IME the speedo unit is one of the more reliable parts of the V8 IC. In fact in
#2 it is one of very few instruments that work reliably (due to an electrical
contact issue with the 26 pin connectors that connect the IC to the outside
world). While your "whack a dash" solution would indicate an issue in the IC,
my speedo issues have been with the sending unit in the tranny ...

Subject: [V8] speedo intermittant?
I guess it’s the usual Type 44 speedo issue. Occasionally my speedo doesn’t
want to work immediately. The “fix” is to just smack the top of the dash with
the flat of my hand, and it wakes up. My father’s ‘90 100 did the same thing
with the same fix. Rarely when using the cruise control, the speedo will stop
working and the cruise control will (naturally) disengage.
The cluster in my car has been out, the speedometer has been rebuilt and the
cruise control was fixed the last time it was at the wrench, and most of the
time, all works perfectly well. I was wondering if anyone has a REAL, permanent
fix for the speedometer issue and if it is just a fault with the earlier V8’s?
My ‘93 V8 had NO electrical issues in the cluster at all. The speedo issue I
have no isn’t worth getting hysterical about at this point, since it works most
of the time and even if it stops while underway, it normally restarts itself in
a few seconds or after a little hand “encouragement”.
