My first ever Audi was a 1985 5000 Avant. We traded my ex-wife’s Mazda RX7 or something for it because it seemed a better car for what we were going to need to do, or at least that was my justification. She hated me for it for two years until I decided we really needed a new Porsche 944....a long time ago, and at least some of those points are lost in time.

I was wondering if anyone here knows what kind of front brakes the ‘85 5000’s had. I wondered if they might be UFO’s. Audi put new front brakes on our car under warranty, under 15,000 miles I seem to recall, as we got some sort of issue with them, and for the life of me, I can’t now remember what it was. But I do remember it went back to the dealer and Audi replaced the brakes. My wife dealt with that entirely as I was traveling long distance daily, and my car was a Mercedes 190D that was bullet proof. (Of course it didn’t go fast enough to need brakes, but that’s another story).

Driving that car the first day we picked it up was amazing because I took it that day to extreme northern Maine in a huge snow storm, and I simply couldn’t imagine how any car could handle so well in those conditions. Two wheel drive, also.

I don’t think there was anything wrong with car that prompted getting rid of it except the 944 was more like the RX7 that my wife had really loved. I think she really liked the 944, too, but it might be that she appreciated it more than the Audi, but still harbored a grudge over the RX7. Probably.
