Audi's wheels at the time were a bit on the soft side, and if not torqued
properly would (will still) cause the rotor to be out of true and wear
unevenly, causing problems. It wasn't a manufacturing defect, the techs
were putting the wheels on with air guns to beat the tight warranty book
times and not torqueing the wheel studs correctly. Audi told them to
torque all wheels and threw a few more minutes for the procedure in their
warranty allotment.
That would be my guess, it's the only front brake issue I remember.
Torque sticks are almost universally used in all repair shops now.
