I've located most of the bits I'll need to do the propane conversion on my V8. I've found the
regulator, plumbing, injectors, I have to drill the intake manifold (need 8 ports), so I'll need a
manifold gasket set, various oddments and so forth. Need a big tank to put in the trunk, they're not
very expensive. Parts cost looks to be under a grand (hopefully).
Here's where I have a problem - most of the propane conversions start on gasoline until the water
temp is about 50C, then the propane can be switched on. Seems the regulator needs to be at least
that hot so it will work.
I need to eliminate the *entire* gasoline system - if I fix the gas system, I might as well leave
the propane conversion off because I don't drive the car 300 miles a day . . . or a week.
Google was able to find some 911 Porsche conversions which evidently had SOME way to get the
regulator up to 45 or 50C, but ALL of the e-mails I sent either bounced or have gone unanswered.
There's a company in Poland, their e-mail is no good, there's a guy in the UK, he was supposed to
answer me (turns out he is presently in Florida), but nothing yet, and so on.
There are a LOT of water cooled VAG V8 propane conversions, but only a few air cooled conversions of
anything, and so far I have been unable to track down how the regulator is pre-heated. I'd like to
find someone who has done this instead of reinventing the wheel - four heater valves, a control box,
a coffee heater (12 volts), etc., there has to be an easier way . . .
BTW, I saw a PanAmerica today (the 4 door 911 Porsche) - ugh - a whale - something about lipstick
and pigs comes to mind. It may be a very competent car, but it is *UGLEEEE* (my opinion, YMMV). If I
was going to spend that kind of money on a car it had better be gorgeous - and this thing is NOT.
Best regards,
