If you plan on keeping the Bose system, and the capacitors haven't
been replaced, then you'll want to replace the capacitors anyway. If
there's no crackle when you turn it on, and all 4 sound good, but low,
it could be the head unit. There was a reason Audi had a whole bunch
of "refurbished" head units for $25 a few years back, that are all
unfortunatly gone and I foolishly didn't even buy 1. Probably the
same bad capacitors in the head unit....Ha My Lago car had the head
unit swapped under extended warranty in 96 or so, and the Black car
I'm still trying to sell(absolutly zero interest) had the head unit
replaced sometime over 10 yrs ago, and it sounds fine, but the rears
are low which I'd attribute to capacitors, and it seems the rears
always go first since they get baked in the sun. Lago has rebuild
amps, and the sound is really full now that the amps are rebuilt, and
I'd describe it like the difference between vinyl and CD.....the 5-
speed's got a newer Alpine and Alpine speakers, and sounds great+the
benefit of plugging in the Ipod/XM radio if I wanted to pay for
it.....If the head unit in Lago dies, then I'll most likely find a
used head unit, because that's the cheap/easy fix since I've done the
amps.....If I commuted in it(which I don't), I'd probably put an
Alpine in. If I recall correctly, the Bose fronts are 4.5" and have 3
mounting screws 120 degrees apart instead of 4/90. I had to make up
a plywood mount to get the standard 4" speaker to mount in the Bose
box in the front doors. They are the same 4.5" speakers used in my
80's vintage Bose 901's that hang from my ceiling and each have 9 of
those speakers, and an "amp" that figures out how to make it sound
like it's got a Bass/Midrange all coming out of those little
tweeters. Tom
